MCILROY SALUTES WESTWOOD

Rory Mcilroy says that the rivalry that has emerged between him and Lee Westwood is a very healthy one, as both motivate each other to perform better, which has helped them both to oust Luke Donald from his number one spot in the World Rankings.

Mcilroy had a great opportunity to become the number one player after reaching the finals of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championships but he lost to Hunter Mahan and hence could not remove Donald from the top spot. Rory Mcilroy had to get past Lee Westwood in the semi finals to make it against Hunter Mahan in the finals.

It was deemed by the critics that the winner of the semi final between Rory Mcilroy and Lee Westwood would eventually go on to win the championship and become the number one golf player in the world but Hunter Mahan proved that he was not to be taken easily by his opponents.

Rory Mcilroy has yet another chance to get past Luke Donald in the world rankings at the Honda Classic. Luke Donald has had a slow start to this season and is a shadow of his former self, but Rory Mcilroy will again have to cross the hurdle of Lee Westwood in the tournament. This relationship between the two has been termed by Rory Mcilroy as competitive yet healthy.

WESTWOOD CHASING NUMBER ONE

Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood might be the best of friends off the course but once they step in the greens, there is no love lost between the two British golfers who will be gunning for a victory at the Honda Classic that will almost ensure the number one ranking. McIlroy could have already become the world number one if he managed to hold on to his nerve in the World Golf Championship – Accenture Match Play Championship final match against Hunter Mahan but he managed to succumb to the pressures of yet another final appearance to lose the championship match and the number one crown, for the moment.

Luke Donald, the current number one player in the world will not be taking part in the Honda Classic after he suffered a first round exit in the World Golf Championship – Accenture Match Play Championship at the hands of Ernie Els and this means that any one of Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy could take his crown. According to the latest golf rankings, a top three finish would be more than enough for any one of the British duo to claim top spot but a win would more or less guarantee the world number one status.

Although Westwood is not in the best of forms at the moment, he is still a major force in the tournament that will see many Major winners taking to the field, including a certain Tiger Woods. But if current form is taken into account, then the man who is almost certain to win the crown is Rory McIlroy but it waits to be seen if the Englishman Lee Westwood takes it on to himself to break up the party of his close friend and practice partner McIlroy and steal his thunder to become the world number one.

Lee Westwood Sorry about Swearing

Golfer Lee Westwood knew that he was in difficulty when him mum called him after his final round at the Qatar Masters. He was caught on tv cursing after his tee shot on the sixteenth and the first person to tell him off for that was his mum!

After Westwood’s 3-under 69 put the golfer in a tie for twelfth, Lee was told by his mum that everyone had heard him swear, and was ordered to apologize. Westwood went on to birdie the sixteenth.

Westwood quickly turned to social networking site Twitter and posted, “Sorry about swearing on the 16th tee. Came off like a rocket and thought it was going further! Wash my mouth out! Perils of live TV!”

Lee is in the Emirates for the Dubai Desert Classic event that begins on Thursday. Ranked 3rd in the world, Westwood is one of the favourites to grab the title in Dubai, partly because of his previous success at the Emirates Golf Club, which included a 2nd placed finish in 2010.

WESTWOOD WINS IN THAILAND

World No. 3 Lee Westwood ended 2011 on a high note by holding off Charl Schwartzel’s challenge and wining the Thailand Golf Championship.

The Nedbank Challenge Winner at South Africa, scored a 69 in the final round to end with a total of 266, 22 under par which was seven shots clear of closest competitor Charl Schwartzel’s with Michael Thompson at third and, Simon Dyson, finishing in a tie for fourth at 12 under.

Westwood’s birdies at the second and third put him one under through the front nine and he matched Schwartzel’s birdie at 12 and went further ahead by claiming another consecutive one. His birdies at 12 and 13 made his position a lot more comfortable and he looked to be on his way to the title.

Schwartzel deteriorated his position and the chance to challenge Lee Westwood by bogeying the penultimate hole and fell back further with a five in the last one.

Lee Westwood’s objective in 2012 is to end his quest of winning a major, and he has rejoined the US Tour to that end. He said that he would be working on his fitness and and all aspects of his game. He feels he is going in the right direction and can see a lot of improvement already with his game. He added that he was happy with the way he finished the year, as he has now won two out the last three events he participated in. He said that his current form and results makes him go into the winter with a lot of confidence and he would try to come out next year playing the same kind of golf as he has been playing over the week, albeit a leaner and well rested.

WESTWOOD RUES MISSED RECORD

Lee Westwood has managed another spell of incredible and awe aspiring golf by leading the charts at this year’s Thailand Gold Open. This world number three golfer has managed to play along with the magical figure of 65 before he managed to leap up and rise above the rest in the chart of leader boards with a score of 60 of a 12 under par towards the end of the season.

He has no need to be disappointed with his score of 60 although he feels that he personally could have done better as he had missed quite a number of shots in the middle.
